AOI, ICT, and FCT do not perform the same function. Instead of asking which test is "best," manufacturers should determine which defects or product functions need to be verified.
AOI: Automated Optical Inspection
AOI (Automated Optical Inspection) uses cameras to inspect the PCB assembly visually.
It is mainly used to identify assembly-related defects such as:
- Missing components

- Visible PCB assembly problems
AOI is particularly useful for high-volume SMT production because it provides fast and repeatable inspection.

FCT: Functional Circuit TestFCT (Functional Circuit Test) tests whether the assembled PCB performs according to its intended function.

- Communication interfaces
- Sensors
- Outputs and inputs
- System functions
- Product-specific operating conditions
Unlike AOI, which mainly checks visible assembly quality, FCT evaluates whether the board actually works as intended.
